MAJOR GENERAL Maurizio RICCÒ
 
Major General Maurizio RICCÒ graduated from the Military Academy and the Service Branch School where he was commissioned 1st Lieutenant of airborne artillery. His military schooling also includes the Italian Army Staff College, the Senior Course at the NATO Defence College in Rome and the “Centre des Hautes Études de Dèfence Nationale” in Paris.
Among his command appointments, he was Company Commander of the 185th airborne artillery Battalion, Company Commander of the Horse artillery Regiment, Commanding Officer of the 1st/132nd armoured artillery Battalion, Commanding Officer of the 132nd armoured artillery Regiment and Commander of the "Granatieri di Sardegna" Mechanized Brigade. During the last appointment he also served as Commander of the Homeland Security National Operation in the central regions of Italy.
He has got considerable international experience which comprises periods spent as the Italian LNO at UNOSOM II HQs in Mogadishu (Somalia), Military Observer at UNIKOM in Iraq and Kuwait, Operations/Intelligence Staff Officer at the Italian Military Representative to NATO Military Committee in Brussels, Military Assistant to ACOS Support at SFOR HQs in Sarajevo (Bi-H), Commander of the Italian Battle Group in ISAF IV in Kabul (Afghanistan), SO1 FCOORD OPS (during the same tenure he was SO1 COORD to COS while NRDC-ITA was leading ISAF VIII), then ACOS G5 Plans and Policy and later on DCOS OPS at HQs NATO Rapid Deployable Corps-Italy (HQ NRDC-ITA), Chief J5 and later on the Commander of the Joint Task Force Sector West based on the “Granatieri di Sardegna” Brigade to the United Nations Interim Mission in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and Chief of Staff to the European Naval Force Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED) HQs in Rome.
He has also covered some assignments within the Italian Army General Staff and Italian Army Training and Doctrine Directorate in Rome.
Since 21st February 2017 he is the Chief Of Staff at the HQs NRDC-ITA.
Major General RICCÒ holds a degree in Strategic Sciences, a degree in International and Diplomatic Sciences (his degree thesis titles “NATO enlargement in the wake of the Prague
Summit: challenges and implications for NATO countries and newcomer members”) and a Master in Strategic Sciences.
His decorations include the Silver Cross for Army Meritorious Service for the operations in Afghanistan as Battle Group Commander, the Silver Cross for Army Meritorious Service for the operations in Lebanon as Joint Task Force Commander, the Gold Cross for long service, the Bronze Medal for long parachuting activity, the UN commemorative Crosses for operations in Somalia, in Iraq/Kuwait and in Lebanon; the NATO commemorative Crosses for operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina and in Afghanistan and the EU commemorative Crosses for operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina and in the Southern Central Mediterranean Sea, the Spanish Merit Distinctive for operations in Afghanistan, the Loya Jirga Medal for the operations in Afghanistan, the Knighthood of the Italian Republic and of the Lebanon Order of Cedar.
He is the co-author of the articles “Effects Based Operations: Dreams and reality for simple victories” and “The new NATO Strategic Concept: between the justification of its existence and its being source of new ideas for facing future challenges”.
