SOLBIATE OLONA (VA), 19th December 2016. Last Friday, "Ugo Mara" barracks, headquarters of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy (NRDC-ITA), welcomed children of soldiers serving in the base and depending units to celebrate Christmas.
Milan, 16th December 2016 – Yesterday evening, in Palazzo Cusani, the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy Commander, Lieutenant General Roberto Perretti, and Senior National Representatives, met with the Consuls of NRDC-ITA foreign contributing nations.
The meeting provided the opportunity to make a point on recent training activities of the HQs and a way ahead on following events.
Solbiate Olona (VA), 14th December 2016. Even this year NRDC-ITA Women’s International Club (NIWIC) organized the Christmas Bazaar at “Ugo Mara” barracks.
This year, the 6.000 euros raised will be donated to “Società Agricola la Stella”, a horse therapy centre in Legnano, working to support disabled people since 1996.
Command Group, led by Lieutenant General Roberto Perretti, has just conducted a training session to maintain the physical readiness.

Solbiate Olona (VA), 18th November 2016. Today the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy started the Summer Tempest 2016 Exercise at “Ugo Mara” barracks. NRDC-ITA is applying all the outcomes of its recent training for high-intensity operations in the role of Land Component Command (LCC).

The NATO Rapid Deployable Corps-Italy and the Italian Army are present at the International Bicycle and Motorcycle Exhibition of Milan (EICMA2016) in a dedicated area where it is possible to jump on a bike-riding simulator and enjoy a selection of motorcycles from the Italian Army Museum of classic military vehicles in Rome.
Solbiate Olona (VA), 10th November 2016. Three months after the August earthquake hit central Italy, NRDC-ITA Women’s International Club (NIWIC) has organized an “Amatriciana Day” at Ugo Mara barracks.
The International Staff serving at NRDC-ITA had a taste of “Amatriciana bucatini” donating part of the income and part of NIWIC funds to the Italian Civil Protection Department.
Solbiate Olona (VA), 8th-9th November 2016. The NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy hosted a Land Component Command Commanders Conference. The event has been organized with the aim of setting up the base for a common understanding of the preparation and readiness requirements to be met for the upcoming certification as LCC as NRDC-ITA takes this challenging responsibility for a stand-by period starting from 1 January 2018.
On November 4th, Italy celebrates its National Unity and Armed Forces Day. In the anniversary of the victory of WWI, Italy remembers the culmination of the process of Independency finally completed with the annexation of the cities of Trento and Trieste and pays honour to the 651.000 fallen that this terrible sacrifice imposed.
Solbiate Olona (VA), 3-4 November 2016. The NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy hosted “The Enhanced NATO Response Force (eNRF) Support Concept” Seminar. This two-day seminar, chaired by Chief of Support Division, Brigadier General Luca FONTANA, represented an excellent forum to discuss the concepts underpinning the support capabilities of NRDC-Italy in its role of Land Component Command as the HQs takes this responsibility starting from January 2018.
Solbiate Olona (VA), 3rd November 2016 - Today, Chief Warrant Officer Amedeo Russo was sworn in as Command Sergeant Major (CSM) of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps – Italy. C-WO Russo has held every enlisted leadership position during his career, ranging from team and patrol leader in a mechanized unit up to NATO Kosovo Force (KFOR) CSM.
Milan, 3rd November 2016 - Today at the “Santa Barbara” barracks in Milan, in the presence of NRDC-ITA Commander, Major General Roberto Perretti, took place the 1st Signal Regiment change of command ceremony. The event marked the handover between Col. Ferdinando Munno and the incoming Commander, Col. Michele Mastronardi.
From 24 to 28 November 2016, as part of the build up to Exercise SUMMER TEMPEST/EAGLE METEOR 16, NRDC-ITA staff and over a hundred augmentees from subordinate units and brigades manoeuvre, undertook a Battle Staff Training (BST) week period.
BST provided the opportunity for NRDC-ITA Command Group and Staff to rehearse the LCC decision making process through boards and working group, and to outline related products and outputs, in view of the upcoming exercise.
During the current week, Rome is hosting the first workshop over 65 years of NATO history on the NATO Stability Policing (SP) Concept development and experimentation.
Solbiate Olona (VA), 20th October 2016. Today, the 13th Plenary Conference of NRDC-ITA took place at “Ugo Mara” barracks, under lead of the Italian Defence General Staff. During the meeting, guests from the 12 Troops Contributing Nations to NRDC-ITA met to check the current structure and functions of the HQ, to provide “fine tuning” changes, in line with doctrinal evolution and lessons learned that could add or amend tasks and procedures.
Solbiate Olona (VA), 19th October 2016. 49 NRDC-ITA non-Italian staff started yesterday a new Italian language course under the direction of Ltc Paolo RIZZO, from NRDC-ITA Influence Division/JFires, who also wrote the learning book, “Sinossi di Italiano” (“Italian Synopsis”).
Solbiate Olona (VA), 14th October 2016. Is just concluded a five days study period held by JLSG (Joint Logistic Support Group) at the Ugo Mara barracks. Solbiate Olona, 4th October 2016 – Members from the 12 contributing nations to the NRDC-ITA attended the celebration of the Day of German Unity (Tag der Deutschen Einheit) at “Ugo Mara” barracks. It commemorates the anniversary of German reunification, October the 3rd 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, which marked the beginning of the end of East Germany. West German Chancellor Helmut Kohl soon began negotiations with East German officials to return Germany to a single nation.

After receiving a “Bersaglieri” honour guard he was updated, by Major General Giovanni Manione, on the NRDC-ITA’s efforts at maintaining readiness and capability so that NATO Stand-by standards are met.
Solbiate Olona (VA), 16th September 2016. Today took place the handover-takeover ceremony among Lieutenant Colonel Fabrizio Fugallo and Lieutenant Colonel Davide Beneduce as NRDC-ITA Support Battalion Commander.

Solbiate Olona (VA), 26th July 2016. Last days for the six weeks exercise, which involved the Staff of the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy (NRDC-ITA) based in Solbiate Olona (VA), and over 100 Staff Officers coming from the subordinate Units.
The exercise "Summer Tempest" has given the chance to refine the operational planning procedures for the future commitments of the headquarters. NRDC-ITA will soon assume the role and responsibilities of NATO Land Component Command (LCC).

SOLBIATE OLONA (VA), 4th July 2016. Today the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy (NRDC-ITA) staff is glad to celebrate the 240th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress proclaiming the Thirteen Nations as a new nation, no longer part of the British Empire.
The anniversary of the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain followed the approval of the resolution by the Thirteen Colonies occurred on July 2, 1776.
Solbiate Olona (VA), 21st June 2016. Today at the "Ugo Mara" Barracks, Lieutenant General Riccardo Marchio', NRDC-ITA Commander, said farewell to Brigadier General Zoltan Gulyas. Assigned on July 2012 as Chief of Combat Support Division, Brigadier General Gulyas was later on appointed as Chief of Influence Division when the new structure on three pillars had to be implemented to successfully meet the NATO standards of a Joint Task Force HQs.

In these days, staff from the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy is attending an Academic session in preparation of the near exercises Summer Tempest and Eagle Meteor 16.
Today Italy celebrates his 70th anniversary as a Republic. A constitutional referendum was held on the 2nd of June 1946 after which Italy changed its form of Government following people’s will. Before this date Italy was a kingdom ruled by the House of Savoy, kings of Italy since the Risorgimento and previously rulers of Savoy.
On Sunday 29 May 2016, the 2° Handicapped Scuba Association (HSA) ”Experience Dive” course and the “Dive Buddy” course took place at the Ugo Mara barracks in Solbiate Olona (VA) and at the “Bustese Nuoto” swimming pool in Castellanza (VA). In close cooperation with the Italian HSA, the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy (NRDC-ITA) Scuba Diving Club repeated the success achieved in 2015, pushing the project entitled: “A sea for everybody”.

Today at “Ugo Mara” Barracks in Solbiate Olona (VA - Italy) the Headquarters of NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy (NRDC-ITA) started another professional Workshop. The aim of these doctrinal events is to discuss all relevant challenges in today’s ever-changing environment, approaching them with the NATO concept of “comprehensive approach”.
Lt. Gen. Riccardo Marchiò represented the NRDC-ITA during his visit at Extrema Ratio, combat knives factory in Prato, Tuscany. Extrema Ratio has been designing, manufacturing and selling high performance combat knives since 1997 enjoying a reputation for excellence in the military and tactical knife industry. Extrema Ratio serves military and law enforcement communities as well as commercial markets and the knives are well known and sought after all over the globe.
Selected NRDC-ITA representatives, led by SPT DIV - J6 Branch Officers, and a 1st Signal Regiment Task Force have been deployed to the 48th CIS Centre in Bucharest (ROM) from the 27th of April'16 and are currently working to test the full interoperability of NATO and national CIS systems employed by NRDC-ITA with many HQs belonging to 12 NATO nations, the Joint Force Command-Naples and 6 NATO CIS Units depending from the NATO CIS Group.
NRDC-ITA is hosting the 3rd annual Joint Logistic Support Group (JLSG) Conference chaired by SHAPE (Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe). Together with selected NRDC-ITA staff, 45 officers from 19 NATO countries are attending the two day Conference on NATO Logistics, actively participating to share situational awareness on JLSG developments and agreeing the comprehensive approach for the future.
NRDC-ITA representatives took part to the Olona Valley Day, an annual traditional local community meeting, organized on the site of the former textile industry in Solbiate Olona, built in the XIX century and one of the first industrial realities in Italy. Its awesome infrastructure is now example of industrial archeology.

Today at the "Ugo Mara" Barracks, Lieutenant General Riccardo Marchio', NRDC-ITA Commander, attended the farewell of Brigadier General Manlio Scopigno. Brigadier General Scopigno was appointed as Chief of Operation Division on September 2014 and, since today, he has been involved in many activities, among them exercise Trident Jaguar '15, one of the most important training activities which has given to NRDC-ITA the validation as Joint Task Force Headquarters.

Solbiate Olona (VA) – 26 April 2016. NRDC-ITA Staff concludes the two-weeks exercise “Sea Eagle (Land) 2016” during which the multinational Staff of the “Ugo Mara” barracks has had the opportunity to rehearse his activation procedures, setting the conditions to allow the Forward Coordination Element (FCE) and the Initial Command Element (ICE) to train their operational Command & Control capability at an early stage and test their deployment capability.
The NRDC-ITA Commander, Lieutenant General Riccardo MARCHIÒ, and NRDC-ITA Chief of Staff Maj. Gen. Giovanni MANIONE, have payed visit to Fiocchi, hunting ammunition and cartridges factory in Lecco.
Today, at the Italian Army Officers' Applied Studies School in Turin, Lt. Gen. Riccardo Marchiò represented NRDC-ITA during the ceremony of inauguration of the monument dedicated to Maj. Giuseppe La Rosa, the last Italian Army Officer fallen in military operation, awarded with the Gold Medal For Military Bravery.
The veterans of the Italian Contingent (ITALCON) sent to Lebanon in 1982 as part of the MFL (Multinational Force in Lebanon), have been hosted at Ugo Mara barracks to remember, together with Lt. Gen. Riccardo Marchiò, the deployment of an Italian contingent to Lebanon as a peacekeeping force during the crisis in the Country in 1982.

Today, 15 April, Prof. General (Ret) Zoltán Szenes, Professor of Security and Defence Studies and former Chief of Defence of Hungary, together with 14 students of the Hungarian National University of Pubblic Service visited the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy, welcomed by Major General Giovanni Manione, NRDC-ITA Chief of Staff.
12th April - Sea Eagle (Land) 2016 is one of this year’s major training events for the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy. It has been structured to test NRDC-ITA's deployable Command and Control (C2) capability.
Today, at the Ugo Mara barracks, Lt Gen. Riccardo Marchiò received the visit of Air Marshal Settimo Caputo, Commander of the First Italian Aerial Region. After attending an introductory briefing about NRDC - ITA, General Caputo has visited the infrastructures of "Ugo Mara" barracks.
The NRDC-ITA International Influence Conference, the first high profile seminar on the influence pillar within NATO community, held at the Ugo Mara Barracks in Solbiate Olona it will be held today, 06 april and tomorrow. The aim of the conference is to enhance influence perspective in operations and to share experiences and lessons learned after the trasformation and validation process to Joint Task Force.
Today has been the final day for the first iteration of the Individual Military Training (IMT) for NRDC-ITA Staff. IMT is a yearly training commitment that has to be attended by all Italian personnel and is as well opened to NRDC - ITA contingents willing to take part in it.

Solbiate Olona (VA), 11th March 2016 - Today “Ugo Mara” Barracks has hosted the Support Regiment change of command ceremony which marked the handover between Col. Beniamino CARTA and Col. Massimo ARTEMI.
The NRDC-ITA Deputy Commander, Maj. Gen. Sir George NORTON, and a representative from the 12 contributing Nations, have payed visit to Agusta Westland Company in Vergiate and its Training Academy in Sesto Calende. Agusta Westland is a the Division of the military related company FINMECCANICA, and is dedicated to helicopters, aeronautics, space, electronics, defence and security systems. The visit represents an added value to strengthen the relationships between the NRDC-ITA and the socio-economic reality.
In order to adapt to the new challenges being faced by the NATO Alliance whilst conducting a structural transition, NRDC-ITA is hosting Eagle Eye Seminar 2016. This seminar brings together experts like Doctor Julian Lindley-French (Strategic Advisory Group of the Atlantic Council of the United States and member of the Strategic Advisory Panel of General Sir Nick Houghton, Chief of the British Defence Staff) and other professionals to develop ideas dealing with these topics.
At the Chicago Summit in 2012, NATO leaders stressed the importance of expanding education and training. At the most basic level, this implies individuals understanding each other and, at a higher level, it implies the use of common doctrines, concepts and procedures, as well as interoperable equipment. Forces also need to increasingly practise working together through joint and combined training and exercising, after which they need to standardize skills and make better use of technology.
Yesterday It was an emotional day in San Candido as the Soldiers serving at NRDC-ITA and currently involved in the exercise “Eagle Snow Master” gathered at the local War Memorial. NRDC-ITA Commander, Lieutenant General Riccardo Marchiò, led his Staff in honoring fallen Soldiers. laid a wreath at the monument and marked a minute silence in their loving memory.
From 18 to 19 February 2016 Staff from Support Division of NRDC-ITA HQ, Logistics and Engineers, paying a visit to Engineer Railway Regiment in Castel Maggiore (BO). The Engineer Regiment is an affiliated unit to NRDC-ITA as per " Technical Agreement" signed with Italy.
The visit was aimed both to share with the Regiment Staff the NATO procedures at operational level and to have a clear picture of the Unit's Capabilities.
From 15th to 19th February 2016 NRDC-ITA hosted the “Tools for Operational Planning Functional Area Service – System Analysis Tool” (TOPFAS-SAT) Course. TOPFAS SAT is the networked software primarily used by Knowledge Development (KD) and other Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) or analysts belonging to all the different branches of the Headquarters.
Today the NATO Rapid Deployable Corps - Italy is hosting His Excellency Peter McGovern, the Ambassador of Canada. The diplomat was received at the "Ugo Mara" Barracks in Solbiate Olona by the Deputy Commander of NRDC-ITA Major General Sir George NORTON, instead of the Commander, currently engaged in an institutional visit to NRDC Greece.
11th February - Today, at the “Ugo MARA” barracks NRDC-ITA Commander, Lieutenant General Riccardo Marchiò received the visit of Major General Maurizio Boni, former NRDC-ITA Chief of Staff and now Commander of the Italian Army Centre of Simulation and Validation, in Civitavecchia. After being welcomed by NRDC-ITA Commander, General Boni had the chance to meet his “old Staff”.

On 2 February, United States Africa Command (USAFRICOM) Commander General David Rodriguez and his staff hosted a visit with NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy Commander LTG Riccardo Marchiò and some of his key staff members. This was the first ever visit to USAFRICOM by a NATO military HQ. NRDC-ITA used this as part of its horizon scanning efforts of the Southern Flank while it remains on standby as a Joint Task Force for NATO.
Today 1st of February at NRDC-ITA begins the week-long “training on job” for 6 Italian Reserve Officers. Reserve Officers are civilian “Subject Matter Experts” in their professional fields. They perform military training and serve in homeland and operations together with the regular Army. Their contribution is given under a fixed-term contract to provide their peculiar expertise to the Army, in case of need.
NRDC-ITA together with his Team of athletes are taking part to the closing ceremony of the Ca.STA. This important event, organized by the Command of the Alpine Troops of Bolzano, has been held for 84 years. In 1931 the Army created this unique competition in order to allow, through a comparison of the best competitive ski-trained units from the Mountain Troops, a periodic assessment of the progress achieved in this field.
Today, 28 January, at the “Ugo Mara” Barracks in Solbiate Olona (VA), where the NATO Rapid Deployable corps – Italy is hosted, is time to focus on safety measures. The fire prevention course is held by Marco Bettin, a civilian engineer highly specialized on that particular topic. NRDC-ITA class is composed by 30 military students with the aim of keeping them up to date on the new rules and techniques to prevent that kind of accidents.

Major General Giovanni Manione, left is duty as Commander of the Italian Army Infantry School in Cesano to take over from Major General Maurizio Boni, former Chief of Staff of NRDC-ITA and now Commander of the Centre of Simulation and Validation of the Italian Army in Civitavecchia.
Today NRDC-ITA athletes are spending the last hours of the training phase in preparation of the CASTA skiing competition which will start Monday. The 5-day competition will involve over 1.000 military athletes, challenging themselves on different slopes. Starting from 1931 with the aim of assessing the training level of each individual Alpine Troops Division, Ca.S.TA became a major event.

Salvatore Farina, Chairman of the Steering Committee for the implementation of the White Paper for the Italian Defence. (Co.G.I.). Lt. Gen. Farina was welcomed by the NRDC-ITA Commander, Lt Gen. Riccardo Marchiò, and during his visit was updated on the development of the activities that will bring NRDC-ITA towards the future objectives.
Today 13 January, NRDC ITA is conducting the Induction Training for the newly assigned personnel to the Headquarters. This important training activity is aimed at providing newcomers with an initial overview about NATO environment, the latest update on new NATO concepts and developments, NATO' s challenges and level of ambition as well as the NRDC ITA HQ's Structure, Core Functions and Processes.
