NRDC-ITA considers China's global approach after COVID-19: European influence and global aspirations.

Professor Holslag discusses the new global posture of China, a key driver of the world economy with increasing social and security implications worldwide.

Milan, 29 April 2020. Continuing with the on-going professional development programme and continuous horizon scanning, NATO Rapid Deployable Corps Italy (NRDC-ITA) has hosted a renowned expert on China.

This latest lecture was titled The China Paradigm: how the Chinese think and how they approach the world. Using video conferencing technology the staff and key invitees from across the NRDC-ITA community considered the complex interplay between gmdl-griding Chinese ambitions, economic strength and related security considerations.

This lecture was delivered by Professor Jonathan Holslag of the Flanders Research Foundation, an advisor to the European Commission and Belgium Ministry of Defence and a respected China expert, having authored of numerous books and articles on the political economy of Asia.

Speaking to over 250 staff and selected guests from across NATO and Italian commands via a virtual conferencing tool, the Professor Holslag outlined China's approach to different theatres including Asia, Russia and Europe, with particular focus on the Chinese strategic-cultural concept - a constant balance

between strength and fragility - emphasizing the ability to constantly generate opportunities from fragility and from unexpected crisis situations, as is happening in the COVD-19 time.

During these challenging times NRDC-ITA continues to deliver excellent training and professional development to its staff and the wider NATO community, whilst working closely and observing the required restrictions necessary to combat COVID-19. NRDC-ITA remains ready to support the Alliance should the need arise.
