NRDC-ITA hosts NATO Operational Planning Course

From 11-22 October, the NATO Comprehensive Operational Planning Course (COPC) was conducted at Ugo Mara Barracks, the operational home of NRDC-ITA.

Solbiate Olona (VA), November 2, 2021. Over 50 participants from across NATO units participated, with students from NRDC-ITA, but also affiliated units like the Vittorio Veneto  division. The attendees were welcomed by NRDC-ITA Commander, Lieutenant General Miglietta, and taught by subject matter experts, a Mobile Training and Education Team (METT),including two Vice Admirals (ret) as mentors, who deployed specifically for the activity from the NATO School in Oberammergau, Germany.

The course ensured that the students from the various units have a common understanding of the NATO operational planning process. Using a fictional scenario, the students were guided through the planning process, eventually producing a plan which would enable NATO to deploy to restore peace and security.

NRDC-ITA is preparing the upcoming Steadfast Jackal 21 Exercise that will train the NATO Command as a Joint Task Force Headquarters in planning and conducting a Non-Article 5 Small Joint Operation with limited complexity, mainly in the Land domain. Training courses like the COPC are vital in this process since they focus the staff on the core functions of NRDC-ITA and wider NATO Alliance, whilst also consolidating links with affiliated units.

The preparation phase also includes a series of activities and academic study days to prepare for the execution phase in the coming weeks. These will ensure that NRDC-ITA continues to be at the forefront of operational capability and is fully adapted to the demanding role of a Joint Task Force Headquarters.

NRDC-ITA hosts numerous courses throughout the year, making it a training hub for Italian and NATO units. The multinational headquarters’ key advantages; excellent facilities, expert staff, and ideal location, make it ideal for hosting such activities.
